Our History

The Familial Cancer Centre started around 1997 at the University of Pretoria as a collaborative service between Clinical Departments and the Cancer Genetics Laboratory.

The Centre is now situated at the Femina Women’s Hospital in Pretoria and operates as a partnership between the University of Pretoria and Netcare.

Our multidisciplinary team provides expert cancer risk estimation, genetic and psychological counselling services and cancer screening. The most important inherited cancer is female breast cancer with genetic testing now available for mutations in the BRCA 1and BRCA 2 genes.

We want to assist patients, family members and the medical fraternity in the utilisation and interpretation of family history, and genetic tests and the management of inherited cancer risk.
